About Pattadakallu
Pattadakal is located on the banks of the Malaprabha River . The town is in Bagalkot district. The temples of Pattadakal bear witness to the eternal richness and splendor of Chalukyan architecture. There are 10 major temples in Pattadakal and all Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Four Temples are built in the traditional Dravidian Architectural style, while another four are integrated in the Nagara Architecture. The remaining two Temples are a mixture of two Architectural Styles.
Temples in Pattadakal :
Virupaksha Temple or Lokesvara Temple has Multiple inscriptions and stone carvings are featured on the stone mandapa. Sculptures of various Hindu Gods are housed in this temple.
Mallikarjuna Temple also called The Trailokeshwara Maha Saila Prasada in a local inscription. The Temple reflects a fully developed South Indian Vimana Style Architecture. In front of the sanctum is an Antechamber with small shrines for Durga as Mahishasuramardini killing the Buffalo demon and another for Ganesha on each side.
Sangameswara Temple also called The Vijayeshvara Temple, is a large, Dravida style east facing Temple. The Vimana superstructure above the Temple and the outer walls of the Temple are well preserved. The Vimana is a two tiered structure, crowned with a square kuta-Shikhara and kalasha. The Temple itself is built on a high plinth consisting of five moulding decorated with Animal and Floral motifs.
Galaganatha Temple has a northern style curvilinear Shikhara. It is noteworthy for an exquisite sculpture of Lord Shiva killing the demon Andhakasura. The entrance to the sanctum is flanked by River Goddesses on both sides with the lintel being carved with a Nataraja.
Kashi Visweshwara Temple also known as Kashi Vishwanatha Temple. The Architectural style used in this Temple is predominantly the Nagara style. It showcases the wonderfully developed style of rekha nagara Shikhara rising in five stages. A well-preserved sukanasa adorns the front of the shikhara with an image of Uma-Maheswara carved within a chaitya arch. The whole shikhara surface is designed in a mesh-like manner.
Papanatha Temple also known as Mukteshwar Temple. The Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture of this Temple is a mixture of Dravida and Nagara styles. The Temple Complex is located on the west bank of River Malaprabha.
Jambulinga Temple is built around a square garbha griha, whose outer walls feature intricate devakoshtha. The Temple also experiments with the idea of projecting sukanasa from the shikhara in front, over the mantapa.
Kadasiddeshwara Temple houses a linga on a peetha and the Nandi bull faces it from outside, there is a mantapa around the sacrum center and also another mantapa provides a circumambulation path in an expanded axial layout. The outer walls of the Kada Siddheshwara sanctum feature images of Ardhanarishvara, Harihara and Lakulisha.
Jain Temple locally named as Jain Narayana Temple. This Temple constructed in Rashtrakuta style having huge Elephants welcoming the visitors at the entrance. The projections and recesses of the mandapa walls contain images of Jina in various postures among other figures.
Pattadakal Dance Festival is also known by the name Chalukya Dance Festival and attracts thousands of tourists from all over the country and the world at large. Venue of the dance festival is located on the banks of the river Malaprabha. Pattadakal Dance festival is held every year under the sponsorship of Govt of Karnataka. Pattadakal Dance Festival is usually held in the month of January. Festival celebrates the magnificence of all the Temples located here. Ten temples are located here together with a Jain shelter which is flanked by several small pedestals and shrines. The festival forwards an electrifying and mystical ambience what with its combination of exquisite performances with beautiful background. The Pattadakal Dance Festival brings to mind several traditional dance forms of India. The Festival is a Three-day affair that takes place towards the starting months of the year. Dancers from all over the world can participate in the festival and show their talent to the enthusiastic audience.
